West Lancashire Railway

Not to be confused with the West Lancashire Light Railway, a heritage narrow-gauge railway in Tarleton. The West Lancashire Railway was set up to connect Preston and Southport, and had its own terminus at each end. It closed in 1964, and very little remains of the route, and this page tries to catalogue what can still be seen. For photos of it when it was still a railway, here  is a good place to start. Preston It started at Fishergate Hill station, at the bottom of Fishergate Hill, Preston. the station opened in 1882, and closed to passengers just 20 years later, when the railway was taken over by Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway, with trains then using the L&Y main station at the top of the hill. It remained as a goods depot until 1965, but has now been demolished, and even the embankment it was on has gone. History of Preston Dock and Quays

[Updated, Apr-May 2026] At one time the Ribble, after passing under Penwortham New Bridge (the one at the bottom of Fishergate Hill), continued some way north, to about where the BMW showrooms are [now Chery showrooms], before heading west through Morrison's car park. The dotted yellow line shows its approximate course. There was a quay on the bend, later known as Old Quay, and a small tidal dock (about 100 m long), with a ship yard just slightly further down river, and the Ship Inn across the road from that. The road is now called Watery Lane. The Ship Inn was replace by the New Ship Inn, which is now Ignite.  This area was known as Marsh End, and was where the Moor Brook (also known as the Swansea Gutter downstream from around the Wheatsheaf)  joined the Ribble. River Douglas at Tarleton

 Happy New Year! It was remarkably warm for January today and sunny too, and I took the opportunity to walk by the river and canal at Tarleton. The River Douglas flows from Winter hill, southeast of Preston, and heads west, then north, flowing into the River Ribble opposite Freckleton. A spur from the Leeds Liverpool Canal, called the Rufford Branch, joins the river at Tarleton. At one time the West Lancashire Railway crossed the river just north of Tarleton, at Hesketh Bank, and there was a short branch line running south beside the river that connected the station to a trans-shipment point at the end of the canal. Passenger services on the line to Tarleton Halt operated from 1912 to 1913 - just over a year! I guess it was not a success. There is a free car park at the bottom of Plox Brow, next to the canal.
