West Lancashire Railway

Not to be confused with the West Lancashire Light Railway, a heritage narrow-gauge railway in Tarleton. The West Lancashire Railway was set up to connect Preston and Southport, and had its own terminus at each end. It closed in 1964, and very little remains of the route, and this page tries to catalogue what can still be seen. For photos of it when it was still a railway, here  is a good place to start. Preston It started at Fishergate Hill station, at the bottom of Fishergate Hill, Preston. the station opened in 1882, and closed to passengers just 20 years later, when the railway was taken over by Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway, with trains then using the L&Y main station at the top of the hill. It remained as a goods depot until 1965, but has now been demolished, and even the embankment it was on has gone. Caton and Halton

This was a great walk between two small towns on the River Lune, just a few miles east of Lancaster. We started from across the river from Halton; there is a free car park near the old station. Th station is very well preserved. There is a sign on it for Lancaster University, and I assume it belongs to them, possibly as a boat house. Behind the station is the River Lune, and a bridge to the town of Halton. Back when the railway was built in 1849, this probably seemed a marvel - a railway just a bridge away! A century later, not so much. The railway was built by the North Western Railway, on its line from Skipton to Lancaster, which, together with the Morecambe Harbour and Railway Company, provided a link from Yorkshire to the port in the new town of Morecambe. The line closed in 1966, and is now a cycle path, which provides a nice walk. A gentle slope but surprisingly steep for a railway. Darwen Tower

 My daugher used to play for Blackburn Rovers girls team, and trained in Darwen. I always wanted to visit the tower, but did not think I had the time to get there and back before she finished. Today I finally realised my dream! This is an official walk, Darwen Tower Walk 2, and a leaflet can be found here . The leaflet claims it is 2 miles; I think it is about twice that. And the steps..? But we will come to that later. It starts from a car park in Sunnyhurst, a village on the west edge of Darwen, which is itself some way up the hill. The road up to it is interesting, with a variety of odd houses. The car park is small, and, while it was okay reasonable early on a Saturday in May, I can imagine it gets very busy sometimes. The route starts by turning right out of the car park. There is not a lot to see for a short stretch as the trees obscure the view, but then they stop and you get the first view across valley... and alpacas.
